How do I use proximity filters ('LexisNexis-style' filters)

Proximity filters enable you to find content where one term or phrase is within n words of the second term or phrase.   Using the example of looking for one term within 10 words of another term, the general format is:

  • SEARCH_TERM_1 within:10 SEARCH_TERM_2
  • SEARCH_TERM_1 W/10 SEARCH_TERM_2

As an illustration, here are a few examples (click the links to try them and modify them for your own content):

  • churchill W/5 painter (find documents where the word 'churchill' is within 5 words of 'painter')
  • churchill within:5 painter (example of an alternative notation to find documents where the word 'churchill' is within 5 words of 'painter')

Some more advanced examples:

We'll place high relevance on documents which contain the words:

restricted stock purchase agreement and have arbitration within 10 words of aaa

If the query is:

We'll place high relevance on documents containing the phrase "restricted stock purchase agreement" and with arbitration within 10 words of aaa

If the query contains a phrase:

We'll place high relevance on documents containing the phrase "restricted stock purchase agreement" and with restricted within 10 words of aaa, stock within 10 words of aaa, purchase within 10 words of purchase, agreement within 10 words of aaa.
